About Chennai
Chennai, earlier known as Madras, is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and is
a major city in the southern India. Chennai is well known for its temples
and rich culture. The Marina Beach in the city is one of the longest beaches
in the world. Chennai is also well known to the sports lovers due to the
fact that it hosts Chennai open, an ATP Tennis tournament. It has one of the
International airports in the country, the madras airport. Chennai is also
known for Bharatnatyam, a particular classical dance form of India and
Carnatic music (special form of Tamil music).
Landscape of Chennai is usually referred to as plain although it has an
average elevation of 6 degrees. It has lakes of varying sizes located in the
western fringes of the city. The geology of Chennai mostly comprises of
clay, shale and sand stone. The city is divided into sandy areas, clay areas
and hard rock areas according to the soil types. Chennai houses the Chennai
international airport and the defense airports such as Tambaram airforce
base, Avadi airforce base and Arakonam airforce base.Bangalore, the Silicon
Valley of India, is only 331 km from Chennai and is well connected with it
through National Highways.
The Marine Beach- The is the second longest beach of the world
adjacent to the Bay Of Bengal. Marine beach is the most famous attraction
among travelers. The stretch is about 5 km and along with it many statue of
political leader and freedom fighters are come across. The view of sunset
and sunrise is splendid in the beach and specially at that time countless
people mob to see the beauty of nature.
Fort St.George- The fort has an historic importance as it was the
first British fort built in 1644. The main city Madras(now Chennai) evolved
around the fort. The citadel of the fort is about 6 meter high and a mute
witness of number of sieges in the 18th century. Now, fort is an
administrative headquaters for the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu.
Inside the fort there is a museum, which preserve many relics from the days
of Raj.
Kalakshetra The famous institute of classical dance,music and
fine arts is one of the fine attraction of Chennai. Established in 1936, the
institute welcomes people from all over the world. The Kalakshetra was
established by late Rukmini Devi for the betterment of the ancient cultural
traditions of India. The auditorium inside the school was built according to
the Natya Shastra.
Guindy
National Park The park is one of the rarest national park where
almost all the possible wildlife can be see. The 3 sq.km wide area covered
by the park preserve black bucks,bonnet macaques,spotted deer,mogoose and
jackals.
Parthasarathi Temple- The temple was built in the 8th century and
dedicated to lord Krishna. The structure of temple is appealing thats why it
is one of the sought after tourist spot in Chennai. Vaikunth Ekadeshi is the
main festival celebrated in this temple. There is seperate prayer ceremony
offer to the deity on every Saturday in the month of Purattasi.
Not To Overlook-Excursions From Chennai
Mahabalipuram- The place is famous for ancient temples of Pallava
dynasty. The place is about 55 km from Chennai city and blossomed by the
creative force by Gupta period. The town is calm and serene and famous for
Arjunas penance and beautiful mandapams for which this city is
identify of.
Covelong If you are enthusiast about history of Tamil Nadu,
the place is ideal for you. The place is covered with ancient historical
munuments such as temples, churches, forts, mosques and lovely and serene
beach. The place is one of the favorite excurssions among travelers.
Kanchipuram- Kanchipuram is a renowned destination among travelers.
Along with Chennai and Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram forms golden traingle of
the Coromandel coast. The dusty town is famous all over world for its
exquisite crafts. The Kanchipuram silk is world famous and finest of all
silk.
Tirupati- Tirupati is an abode of the legendary lord of the seven
hills and famed for its shrines. It is located in the Chittoor district in
Southern Andhra Pradesh at a distance of around 152 km from Chennai famous
its carved temples. The main attractions are Pratima Mandapam, which has the
statue of Sri Krishnadevaraya,Tulabharam. The Tirumalanayaka Mandapam, which
has a beautiful stone carvings.
Location- The city of Chennai is located between 13th long parallel
and 80-degree longitude. The Bay of Bengal is in the east of Chennai.
Kanchipuram, famous district of TamilNadu for sarees (women wear) is in the
south of Chennai while the states of Karnatak and Andhra Pradesh are in the
north and east.
Climate- The climate in Chennai is hot and humid for most of the
times in the year. The lowest temperature can be around 18 degree Celsius
while the maximum can go up to 44 degree Celsius. The average annual
rainfall is about 1300 cm.
How To Reach?
By Air- Chennai Anna International airport is connected with most of
the major cities of the world and India. Domestic airlines operate daily
flights to all major cities of the country from the Kamaraj domestic
terminal. Both air terminal is located about 20 km from the city.
By Rail- Chennai is the headquater of southern railway. All the
major railways connect with Chennai. Chennai railway is linked with all
major cities of India.
By Road- Chennai is linked with all major cities of India by
nationla highways and road. Most government bus service operates from newly
opened Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal.
