Kaziranga
national park is one of the esteemed wildlife park of India located in Assam
on the banks of mighty Brahmaputra river. It is also one of the few park in
India, which has many attractive giant wilds, undisturbed by human presence.
Famous for worlds largest population of
one-horned rhinoceros as well as many
mammals including royal
Bengal tigers,
Asian elephants, panthers and bears.
Thats why place is also knowns as a park of giants. Home of thousands of
different species of birds spread over 430 square kilometers. The place is
also a UNESCO world heritage site.
The park recently celebrated the 100 years of survival of one horned rhinos
in Assam, is one of the famous tourist attractions of north east India. The
place is remarkably achieved the feat to conserve highly endangered species
of rhinos and proud of 80 percent of world population of one horned rhinos.
In 1905 due to random paoching the rhinos were in the verge of extinction
and there population is reduced to 12 but after much effort and vigil now
the park has more than 2000 rhinos populations. In 1985, Kaziranga national
park was declared as UNESCO world heritage site. Undoubtedly one rhinos
spell luck to the park but there are other animals like elephants, bison,
leopard, hog deers and tigers, which also securely stay in the park. Not
only that, Kaziranga is also a popular place for bird watchers. Kaziranga is
a home of as many of thousands species of birds. Some of the popular species
of Kazirangas are Pallass fishing eagle, white tailed eagle,
oriental honey buzzard, brahminy kite, black shouldered kite and grey headed
fishing eagle. During winter months migratory birds from Siberia also flock
the park.
Guwahati - It is the capital of Assam and a gateway to north east
India. there are plenty of place to to see in this small capital city. Assam
state museum is located just 10 minutes walking distance from Guwahati
railway station. Other attractions are various temples including umananda
and janardana temple. Assam state zoo is specailly famous for crocodiles.
There is also a small botanical garden in Guwahati. Other tourist
attractions includes chandubi lake, which is an ideal picnic spot and
Sualkuchi, which is one of the worlds largest weaving villages often
called manchester of the East.
Shillong - The capital is Meghalaya is notorious for rainfall and
chilling weather. It is in an altitude of 1,520 meters above sea level. It
is often called as Scotland of the East because of skriking similarity with
the Scottish highlands. Distance from Guwahati is 104 km and from Kaziranga
is 295 km. Some of the attractions of Shillong are Shillong peak, which is
the highest point of Shillong at an altitude of 1965 meters from the sea
level. Also elephant falls is in the upper Shjillong, 12 kms from the
outskirt of the city spot mountain streams descends through two successive
falls set. Also one of the famous place is Cherrapunjee also known as Sohra
by locals is located 56 kilometers from Shillong and 1300 meters above sea
level. The place is famous for some exotic water falls and its limestones
caves. Other interesting places are botanical garden, lady hydari park, golf
course, bishop and beadon falls, sweet falls, noh kalikai falls and many
more.
Invaluable Suggestions
Visitors need to take permit to enter into Kaziranga national park. They
have to register at the Tourist center in the Bonani Tourist Lodge. Charges
for cameras and vehicles are additional.
The best season to visit Kaziranga is the winter- approximately November to
April.
Jungle safari on elephant back is one of the tourist attractions in
Kaziranga. So dont miss the attraction.
Kaziranga is not only about national park but also you can stroll through
th lush coffee and rubber plantation at Karbi Anglong.
Light cotton clothes in summer and woolen clothes in winter is must.
Rainy season should be avoided.
Visiting Kaziranga individually is a costly affair because there is two
tier fee system that is different entry cost for Indians and Foreigners. So
its advisable to enter the park in a group.
There are plenty tourist lodges present where you can stay. Some of the
famous ones are Aranya lodge, Bonoshree lodge, Kunjaban lodge.
By Air : The nearest airport is situated at Guwahati,
which is 217-km away from the park.
By Train : The nearest railhead is Furkating, situated
75-km away from Kaziranga National Park.
By Road : Kaziranga is well connected to its near by
cities like Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat by NH-37.
