Mumbai
Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and one of the industrial hubs in
India. It is also sometimes referred to as the industrial capital of India.
It houses important financial institutions, such as Reserve Bank of India
and the Bombay Stock Exchange. Bollywood, the heartland of Indian film and
television industry is also in Mumbai. Mumbai is also well known for its
beaches, Juhu and Marine drive being the most popular for the lively
afternoon pastimes. Mumbai is called the
gateway
of India and has a monument of the same name in it.
The Landscape
The city of Mumbai is said to be originally seven islands earlier. Mumbai
is located on Salsette Island in the coastal region known as Konkan. Most of
the Mumbai is at sea level and average elevation ranges from 10 to 15
meters. Soil cover in the city region is sandy due to closeness to the sea.
The Location
Mumbai is located between 19-degree latitude north and 73 degree longitude
east. It is near to cities like
Pune and
Nagpur.
The Climate
The city is in tropical zone and near the Arabian Sea. So, it has moderate
weather conditions. The temperature ranges from 11degree Celsius to 38
degree Celsius annually. The maximum ever-annual rainfall ever recorded is
3452 mm.
Gateway of India
Gateway of India in Mumbai is a major
landmark of India. It is a huge archway on the water edge at the Apollo
Bunder.
Juhu
Beach
Juhu beach is a well accomplished beach and is one of the largest. This
beach is amongst the most frquented beaches of India and is located 18 kms
from the city centre.
Marine Drive
Located in Central Bombay, Marine Drive was constructed in 1920s and 1930s
on a reclaimed land.The drive is 3 km from South Bombay. The roads connects
Nariman Point and Malabar hill.

Kanheri caves
This is amongst the popular caves of India. Kanheri caves is carved out of
native rock and have around 112 caves which form the rigid complex of these
caves. Kanheri caves are one of the oldest monasteries in the country.
Elephanta Caves
Elephanta caves is also known as the Gharapuri or the fortress city of
India. This is a seventh centuary cave temple complex which have been
unqiuely carved out of rock. The caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva and is
magnificent 18 feet high.
