About Port Blair
The Jail Island, Port Blair was infamous for "Kala pani", a
jail-sentence in an island surrounded by water during the British Days. One
can enjoy the Sound and Light shows, held every weekdays to learn about the
brutality and history of the prison. Corbyn's cove (7 km) is the nearest
beach to Port Balir but is risky for swimming. Some of the other major
attractions in the island are Samudrika Marine Museum, Anthropological
Museum, Mini Zoo and Forest Museum, Water Sports Complex, Ross Island,
Wandoor (29 km) and Chiriya Tapu (30 Km).
Lush greenery surrounded by water and only a handful of people make Port
Blair a natural and exotic island full of flora and fauna. The Union
territory capital is obsessed with rain forests and excessive bio diversity.
Connected though an airport and port Port Blair is not a thickly populated
place, with a population of about 3.5 lakh. Main languages of Port Blair are
Hindi, Nicobarese, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali.
Cellular Jail- Cellular Jail is the signature attraction of Port
Blair. The jail was built by British to exile freedom fighters and brought
to the lonely island to serve the sentence. The jail took 18 years to
complete. Individual cells were for solitary confinement. The jail is now a
popular tourist attraction and now converted into memorial and national
museum. Every evening light and sound show is staged to narrate the freedom
fighting story.
Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park The huge park comprises
of 15 islands,creeks and open sea spread across 280 sq.km. The park consist
of mangrove creeks, tropical rain forests, rare coral reefs and marine life.
There are options of snorkeling and scuba diving to watch the colorful
marine flora and fauna.
Mount Harriet- Mount Harriet is the highest peak in South Andamans.
The distance from Port Blair to Mount Harriet is about 55 kilometers and
will be reached only by road. From the top of the peak you will witness the
splendid view of crystal clear blue sea, islands and natural beauties. A
nature trail from mount Harriet to Madhuban is always on the list of
tourists. Mount Harreit was the summer headquarter of Britishers.
Anthropological Museum The museum is also a hot favorite
among tourist. The museum preserve ancient tools, cloths and models of
aborigines of Andaman and Nicobar islands. The museum is at MG road. The
museum remain closed on Mondays and holidays.
Chidiya Tapu(Island of birds)- Chidiya Tapu is a small village about
25 kilometer from Port Blair. The place is serene and green mangroves and
long sandy beaches make the place a beautiful place to visit. The island
also offer snorkeling and scuba diving adventure spot.

Cinque Islands- Because of its rare coral, underwater marine life
and tropical rain forest, the place is declared as a sanctuary. The
marvelous sandy beaches joins the islands, the north ans south Cinque is one
fantastic scenery. To reach the islands you have to take chartered boats,
which leave from Port Blair, Chidiya Tapu and Wandoor.
Madhuban - The popular trekking area of Andaman, located in the
southern part of the islands, a place simply beautiful for exotic flora and
fauna, endemic birds, animals and butterflies and elephants.
Havelock
Island The island is another beautiful and serene place to visit.
The place is adorned by lush green forest and sandy beaches. The place is
connected with Port Blair by boats, plying six times a week. There is
government tourist resort that gives cosy accommodation.
Little Andaman Island- The place is known as little Andaman Island
because it is mini Andaman having all the natural beauties, waterfall, a
beautiful beach and coconut palm fringe. The place is 120 km by sea and have
modern accommodation facilities.
Mayabunder- The lonely beach is situated about 136 km away from Port
Blair. You can go either by road or sea. It is in the middle of Andaman and
an excellent scenic place. Mayabunder beaches are known as one of the finest
beaches in Andaman. Most of the inhabitants are the settlers from Burma.
Karmatang beach is largest turtle nesting ground. Boat and bus services are
available from Port Blair.
Location : It's in the southeast part of the south Andaman Island
and nearly 1200-km away from Kolkata and Chennai. Falls between 6 degree
North latitude and 94 degree East longitude, the Andaman (Port Blair is the
capital) are a group of islands in the Bay of Bengal.
Climate : The Climate is moderate with temperature lying between
18-30 degree Celsius. The rainfall during the months of July- September
remains around 318 cm.
By Air : Port Blair is connected with Chennai and
Kolkata by air.
By Ship: Passenger ships are available from Chennai,
Kolkata, and Vishakhapatnam and back. There are three to four sailing from
Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair every month.
