About
Shimla
The summer capital of India during the British Raj, Shimla is now the
capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is a popular hill station and believed to
get the name from "Shamalaya", an incarnation of goddess Kali, the
deity of power and wrath.
The Kali Bari (a temple), Jakhu temple, tara devi temple, the mall road and
the marketplaces (for woolen garments) are places of interest to tourists.
There's a beautiful wild flower hall, with many wild species of flower,
situated at the Mahasu range, 13 km from Shimla. Shimla is located in the
Middle Western ranges of Himalayas. The region is a hilly terrain and has
evergreen pine trees. Snowfalls are common during peak winter season and
hence the place does not have dense forest. Pine trees are abundant and can
be seen anywhere in the city.
The Mall- The most prominent attraction of Shimla. Incidentally, the
place has nothing special and more of a market place like any other hill
station but still the place where everyone loved to there. In British period
the place was a posh market place of Britishers. Still today you will
witness various foreign nationals strolling on the streets. The place is
also popular among tourist, its quite common to watch newly wed
couples pose for photograph. The place is spotted by colorful markets and
commercial plazas. A perfect place for hangout.
Christ Church and St. Michael's Cathedral- The second most oldest
church of northern India was built from the duration of 1846 to 1857. The
church is glorified with lights in the night. The architecture of the church
is Gothic style and the windows are of stained colorful glasses.
Chadwick
Falls- The 67 meters high water falls streaming down from a thick forest
at a height of 1600 meters. The falls are in the best shape in the monsoons,
line of deodar trees line the forest, which makes a picturesque scenery.
There are old Hindu temples on the top of the forest and a annual fair is
held in April every year.
Jakho Temple- This ancient temple is located in the height of 2438
meters and dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The highest point in the Shimla and a
popular spot among tourist not just because of towering height but also for
a religious significance.
Tara Devi- The temple is also a popular spot in Shimla but located
around 15 kilometers away from it. Perched on Tara Parvat(Tara mountain).
The lush green environment makes the temple a scenic place to visit. The
temple can be visited while traveling on the Kalka - Shimla National
Highway.
Not To Overlook- Excursions From Shimla
Chail - Chail is a small hill station located 45 kilometers from
Shimla. Chail is particular beautiful for its natural beauties and wonderful
sceneries. The main attractions of Chail are Chail wildlife sanctuary, Sidh
Baba Ka Mandir, Maharajas Place, Cricket Ground and others. If you are
planning to visit the place during winter, there are options of skiing and
trekking.
Fagu- This small hill station in Himachal Pradesh is located 22
kilometer from Shimla famous for orchards and valleys. The place is located
at 2510 meters above from sea level. Fagu is also a popular among trekkers
and also among naturalist. The place is beautifully placed in the slopes of
Himalayas and sceneries can easily mesmerize anyone.
Kufri- Britisher discovered Kufri in the year 1819 before it was a
kingdom of Nepal and obliterated from rest of the world. The place is
situated 19 kilometer from Shimla and renowned for its beauty and snow clad
mountains. The place is small and no option of rail or air transport and
only reached by road. Best time to visit Kufri is during winter as there are
option to skiing and tobogganing. You can also enjoy horse ride and yak ride
during summer.
Narkanda- The place is located 2,708 meter high on the top of
Himalayas and from Shimla it is around 60 km. Narkanda is in the middle of
fragrant pine forest. Awe inspiring view of snow peak mountain makes it a
popular place among travelers. In addition Narkanda has an excellent spot
for adventure activities. During winters Narkanda is crowded with people
coming for for hiking and skiing.
Location : Shimla is located in the northern Belt of India. It is
located between 31-degree north latitude and 77 degree east longitude. The
nearest large city is Chandigarh, 115 km away on national highway .
Climate : Shimla is one of the coolest places in India. Even in
summers the maximum temperature never goes up to 28 degree Celsius. Winter
is from December to February, with frequent snowfalls and chilling
atmosphere.
By Air : Nearest airport near Shimla is Jubbarhati,which
is 23 kilometer from the main city. The airport is linked with Chandigarh,
Kullu and Delhi.
By Rail: Shimla is connected with major cities in the
country. There is also an option of toy train from Kalka to Shimla, which go
through 107 tunnels and lofty arch bridges.
By Road :-Regular bus service from Delhi, Chandigarh and
other major nearby states ply to Shimla. There are variety of option of
buses ranging from government to luxury Volvo buses.
