With dozens of rivers and numerous streams, India offers vast opportunities
for angling. Even if you are a novice with a stopgap arrangement or a
professional angler with latest tackle, you are in for a time of your life.
India is blessed with a huge coastline of more than 3000 km and estimated
55000 km of lakes, streams, rivers, tributaries and reservoirs. Department
of Fisheries of different states also work very efficiently, as a result
sport fishing come up in a big way.
Even now a days avid anglers of western countries have started to realise
the potential of India and start moving to India. The day is not so far when
some of the biggest catches would be attributed to Indian rivers. The
biggest advantage of India is the major rivers are placed in the or near
major cities. Therefore, it is easily reachable. Some of the major rivers
and tributaries are Mahanadi, Yamuna, Kaveri, ganga, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and
Teesta where anglers can catch a number of fishes like Mahseer, Trout, Rohu,
Katla, and many. Indian coastal water also have some fantastic variety of
fishes such as Mackerel, Marlin, Sea bass etc.
Fishing also promote the tourism and adventure sports in india. Most of the
states have now their own hatcheries and fish sanctuaries. These steps have
been taken to maintain the stock of fishes in the major rivers of India.
Fishing in India is possible throughout the year because of different
climatic conditions in different regions of India. In the Himalayas, the
best season is from October to November and from April to June. It is also
know the breeding season because fishing is not allowed in breeding season.
There is a need of permit for angling in major rivers. You have contact the
tourism and fisheries department of the state in which you intend to go
fishing. Foreigners are not allowed in certain restricted areas without
special permits. Permits can be obtained by Ministry of Home Affairs of The
Government of India. also you have options to stay in camp in the wilderness
or in forest lodges, which state governments have started to promote
tourism. There are also number of private camps,w hich can be near some
excellent beats.
