Recently I get an opportunity to visit Jaisalmer, The Golden City
in Rajasthan. Known for the beautiful Havelis and temples, all
built of the golden and lusterous stone, the city aptly reflects the rich
cultural heritage of the state.
Jaisalmer is the only city in India where people still reside within the
fort premises. The gigantic and magnificent fort speaks volumes about the
struggles and victories of the citys people against the enemy. There
are beautiful bazaars within and at the outskirts of the fort, where
the locals sell artifacts, tapestry, handicrafts and other items at an
affordable price.
There are local mini buses which ply within the city. Guides are also
available who are well versed with the area and history of the city. Few
kilometers away from the city are sand dunes. It is an enchanting experience
to view the sunset at height. One must never forget to have a camel ride,
within the silence of the dunes.
